Dogs, cats and other pets are often not at ease when meeting a new baby. They need time and patience to get used to the idea of a new member of the family.

Pets often need help in adjusting to the idea of a new arrival in the form of a baby and since animals can be unpredictable, it is wise to be realistic.

Pet owner's don't want to shut the dog or cat out of the family when a baby arrives on the scene but at the same time, new rules may need to be laid down.

Preparing Dogs or Cats for a New Baby

Even while pregnant, it may be a good idea to observe how a dog or cat may react to an infant. While the pet is watching, hold a doll or place it on the floor. A recording of a baby crying may also serve as an indicator of a pet's reaction. Invite friends around who have babies or toddlers and help the pet to get used to seeing them around. Supervise them carefully when they are around these little people and use rewards to make the experience positive.

Making Decisions about Pet Behavior

A new parent needs to decide what boundaries need to be set, such as:

  • Deciding whether or not the pet is welcome in the baby's room.
  • Remember that tiny babies and pets should not be left alone in a room together, however trustworthy the animal is. A cat may curl up on top of a baby to sleep or a dog may jump onto a baby. Consider purchasing netting to fit over the crib.
  • A cat may need to be taught not to jump onto a changing table.
  • A dog may assume the baby's toys belong to him and may possibly chew and play with toys left scattered on the floor. A pet owner must decide whether or not to keep the dog confined to certain rooms or kept outside.
  • A possible decision to be made is that of having the cat or dog spayed or neutered. This is because a male dog or cat will urinate or spray on new things brought into the house, like a crib or stroller.

How to Train a Dog or Cat to Behave Appropriately

The best way of training animals is to reward good behavior and ignore bad behavior. Be consistent when teaching a dog or cat a new set of rules. According to Julia Davies, Pet Behaviorist, it takes between 3 - 5 days for a dog to follow new rules and 7 - 10 days for a cat.

When introducing the new baby to the family pets, allow them to calm down. Sit in a chair that is high enough and bring in one animal at a time to sniff the baby's feet area. Repeat the process every half hour or so. It will take a few days for pets to adjust to the baby's presence.
