Make Your Dog a Canine Good CitizenAKC Offers a Certification Program for All Well Behaved Dogs
The American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen or CGC program offers all dogs, regardless of breed, a way to certify they have achieved a standard of training and care
The American Kennel Club (AKC) developed the Canine Good Citizen program as a way for all dog owners, regardless of their dog's type or background, to certify that the dogs and their owners were committed to a standard of behavior to make them a welcome member of the community. The program launched in 1989 when 1,392 dogs were certified; nearly 40,000 dogs are expected to become certified in 2009. There are more than 9,000 evaluators certified to conduct testing and award CGC certificates. Tests are conducted at a number of different venues, including dog training centers, pet stores, dog shows and humane societies. More information about upcoming tests and certified testers can be found on the AKC website. CGC Test Includes Ten Elements and an Owner PledgeThe CGC test itself includes ten skills test for the dog and owner. The skills tested include the dog's reactions to a friendly stranger, a crowd, and another dog. The dog must demonstrate understanding of several basic obedience commands, including sit, down, stay, come and walking on a loose lead. He or she has to accept the attention of a stranger who attempts basic grooming, react calmly to distractions, and be able to wait calmly when separated from their owner. The owner must show that the dog has been vaccinated to comply with local ordinances and sign a pledge to provide for the dog's health, safety, and quality of life without infringing on the rights of others. Training for a Canine Good Citizen TestMany dog clubs and training schools offer training classes geared toward achieving the CGC award or which cover all the elements needed for your dog to pass. Many dogs will be able to achieve a CGC after completing their first basic adult obedience class; those that have also had a puppy training class will have an advantage. To locate a CGC training class in your area, contact local dog clubs or training schools for referrals, or check the AKC CGC web page. Finding and Passing a Canine Good Citizen TestWhen you feel your dog is ready for the CGC test, the best way to locate a test is again, through local dog clubs and training schools. Only one passing score is required for the CGC to be awarded.
